The narrator of this book has a *lot* going on - for sure the only black bisexual Nebraskan dancer in ED recovery I've ever read. With all those competing identities the internal monologue can be quite overwhelming, which is both true to the character experience (I imagine) and at times difficult to read, especially with so much "voice" in the narrative. That said, there was a lot in here that resonated as a person who spent much if high school trying to figure out how to support friends who struggled with eating and body image, and of course with being queer in a semi-hostile/prefers to pretend you don't exist environment. There's a lot of internet discussion about whether this book is "lesbophobic," which I find interesting but ultimately unconvincing - more than anything it's a book about the way teen girls treat each other, which unfortunately involves a fair amount of bullying and social jockeying, perhaps especially within marginalized identity cliques.
