FitzChivalry is one of the best characters I have ever encountered in fiction (up there with Eren, Anakin, Darrow). The pain and torment this character has gone through is truly heartbreaking. As I type this I am heartbroken for a character that never existed. Over the trilogy you see a man fighting with everything he has, sacrificing everything of himself for his King, people and loved ones even as he receives nothing in return. The ending is not one that is happy. It is not a Disney ending where the hero gets the girl, wealth and love. Fitz ends knowing that all he loved most is out of his reach and he will not be able to get it back. He lost his father figure, his brother figure, the love of his life. Reading his character development was witnessing a character be so emotionally tortured yet having the strength and courage and stubbornness to do his job and what is right. His actions directly lead to the Six Duchies survival along with his loved ones and they will never even know of his sacrifice. What an incredible trilogy, what incredible characters. Hobb is truly a genius. I truly love this series.
