The Little White Horse
by Elizabeth Goudge
Oh, how I wish I had read this book as a child! I read it with a friend, and we both agreed that as children this is the kind of book we would have finished and, immediately, turned back to the first page to read again. The language in this book is beautifully descriptive so you see the actions as clear as if you were there. Though set in 1842, because of the suggestion of magic that surrounds Maria and Robin, it could as easily be yesterday. Maria is a captivating heroine who seeks to discover the mystery of Moonacre Manor and to right that which is wrong. As readers of Elizabeth Goudge would expect, the Manor itself plays a major role in the story and is more like a character than merely a setting. I long to go live there myself.
