If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha is set in South Korea and follows four women and their work and lives. I have heard about the beauty standards in South Korea and how people aspire to attain flawless beauty standards. As a K-pop and K-drama fan I was very eager to read this book and I was not disappointed.
This is about four women,Kyuri,Miho,Ara and Wonna. Kyuri undergoes several cosmetic procedures to enhance her beauty to be one of the top employees of salon bars which entertain male customers. Miho is an artist who comes back to Korea after art school in New York. She has a troubled and complicated relationship with her chaebol boyfriend. Ara is a mute hair stylist in one of the salons in Gangnam. She is obsessed with Taein,one of the idols of a K-pop group. Wonna lives in the apartment below Kyuri and is worried about her economic status and does not want her daughter to suffer like her.
This book is not written in a conventional manner and there is no concrete beginning,middle part and ending. Each chapter is dedicated to one of the women and only very few events overlap. The ending is not very expected but I really liked it since it was way more realistic. A good read!
