What I Lost by Alexandra Ballard

4.0

"You have been through a war, and you've won."

Trigger warning: Eating disorders, anxiety, self-harm.

I am so, so glad I decided to pick up this book. At first, it was just the synopsis and the cover that attracted me. No one had recommended it to me (speaking of which, how come?) and I'd never heard anyone talk about it (again, how come??)

And now I know there is so much more about this book that makes it so good. As someone who still struggles with body image and relates a lot to that voice in Elizabeth's head, this book spoke to me directly. It was a book I needed, and a book I hope everyone reads because it doesn't just talk about the struggles of body image and eating disorders; it also gives hope. Treatment is possible. Would it be difficult? Would it be challenging? Yes. But with the right help and the will, things do get better.
This book highlights that again and again, which is something you always need when reading a book about a disorder. This is undoubtedly one of the best books I've ever impulse-bought.
