Do you ever read multiple books by an author and go "oh, this strange syntax must be from the translation" only to discover that the author actually wrote in English all along?

Welcome to the last thirty minutes of my life hahah.

That's not to say that the weird-ish syntax is bad. It definitely is not. And with Klara and the Sun, it, if anything, enhances the writing (and with The Buried Giant, which is the other Ishiguro novel I've read, it gave the novel a dream-like quality which was actually perfect).

I went into Klara and the Sun completely blind -- I didn't even read the back cover -- and so it took me a while to realize what I was reading. It also took me a while to become immersed in the book. But once I was sucked in, I was happy to be swept along on the ride.

There's a lot going on in this novel, but ultimately it comes down to love and all the different ways that it's expressed. This book was a great read, especially buddy reading it along with my friend and getting to discuss it as we read.
