The Darkest Corner of the Heart by Lisina Coney

3.5

This book follows the life of Maddie Stevens who we first saw in the first book of this series as the little sister of the male main character.

Maddie was such an interesting and complex character, you can’t get enough of her. I loved her highs and her lows, her confidence and her shyness, her pride and her embarrassing moments. James was also a really good main character. I loved his grumpiness, his bossiness, his charm and his cheekiness.

The whole plotline was so heartbreakingly good. From the accident to them getting to know each other to the family troubles that also happened. Reading about how Maddie feels lost and tries to find her future as a uni student hit right at home and the way this progressed gave me hope that everything will go just fine if you just believe and work for it.

The only thing that kind of annoyed me was the whole “Oh she’s younger than me I shouldn’t do anything” plot. I find it really maddening when older male characters think like that but still say fuck it moments later and act on their “thoughts”. It’s the only reason I’m not the biggest fan of the age gap trope; this always happens.

BUT I did enjoy how they communicated that their age difference is a big deal and won’t go unnoticed. That was new and very much welcomed. Overall, this was a really good book that I definitely recommend you read!
