Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir By One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII
by Judith Schiess Avila, Chester Nez
I met Chester Nez at the Santa Fe Days in Carrollton, Texas a few years ago. He was there with Judith Schiess Avila promoting this book. Chester truly led a remarkable life and served his country bravely even when it didn't consider him a member of society that deserved equal rights. It's sad that it took so long for our country to honor the service that the Navajo code talkers did. Too many died before receiving recognition and many never were able to tell their families of their part in the war. The book is a memoir and tells Chester's life story. He suffered many losses in his lifetime, but he seemed to be able to keep things in perspective and always preservere. I'm honored to have been able to have met him and to have a copy of his memoir signed by him.
