Steph's Outcast by Ruby Dixon
4.0

I wasn't sure how to rate this but the overall story with the tribe helped this book earn four stars.

The FMC is somewhat annoying. I don't like how she just allows things to happen to her instead of taking charge of her life. The MMC tells others they are mates and she just goes along with it because she's afraid he won't join the tribe if she corrects him. She likes him though and continues to kiss him and fool around. Not only is this just being passive but she also is leading the MMC on. She ended up developing deeper feelings, but what if she hadn't? She would have broken his heart eventually and it would have been because she didn't correct his assumption at the appropriate time to do so.

The MMC, Pak and Daisy really save this book for me. I enjoyed the MMC and Pak assimilating into life with the tribe. I got tearful when the MMC and Pak temporarily left because their despair was palpable. I also enjoyed how different Daisy is from everyone else. I understand she is viewed as not pulling her weight but she is a ray of sunshine with her attitude and I think that's needed in the tribe. She also was great with Pak. I don't know why they don't see that Daisy can be a babysitter/ child care worker while others get tasks completed. That's a legit job, especially in a growing tribe. It should be her role.

I liked how the MMC and his brother made steps toward having a relationship. The MMC and Pak's life has been so difficult and it's sad to think about how they've lived alone and had only each other to depend on for so long. I give this book four stars for pretty much everything about this book apart from the love story. The love story was just okay. It was frustrating to read how all in the MMC was from the beginning and then when you get to the FMC's inner monologue, she's wishy washy and just having fun. When she developed deeper feelings, I couldn't help but think, "but what if you didn't? Don't you think it's pretty crappy of you that you were going to break his heart if you didn't?"
