Paper Girls: Book One by Brian K. Vaughan
4.0
I initially bought the first volume on impulse from Barnes & Noble because I was such a big fan of Brian K. Vaughn's writing in Saga. Despite being in love with the intriguing cover art, I never actually got around to reading the copy I bought. It just sits on my graphic novel shelf. :(
Instead, I ended up grabbing the whole book #1 collection from the library so that I could just binge-read without having to wait for another trip to Fargo (nearest Barnes & Noble location) to buy the next volume. I learned my lesson with Saga that I am not great at patience.
After finishing book #1 here are my thoughts:
The first thing that took me by surprise was just how heavy it was. But I guess that's what I should have expected for a giant hardback collection. (Can you tell this is my first time really reading comics in hardback?) It took me longer than I expected to get this one so I had to renew it from the library. Unlike Saga, where I was totally engaged in the story from the beginning, this one took me a while to get into. I think there was just so much going on that it was a little weird trying to keep track of all the characters, times, and locations. I read about the first half or so in one sitting, back in November, but once I put it down I had a difficult time bringing myself to pick it back up again. However, I did pick it up again today and breezed through the second half in an hour or so. Now that I'm through book #1 I'm looking forward to book #2, and will definitely get around to reading it. Unlike when I finish a volume of Saga, for example, when I finished reading today I wasn't left with the same instant need to continue the story and find out what happens next as soon as possible. Instead, I picked up [a:Molly Ostertag|8512129|Molly Ostertag|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1512747291p2/8512129.jpg]'s [b:The Midwinter Witch|49572601|The Midwinter Witch (The Witch Boy, #3)|Molly Ostertag|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1576859071l/49572601._SX50_.jpg|67231020].
