A book of morals, certainly of it's time. It is a constant cycle of - this sister has a terrible terrible personality flaw e.g being too "boyish", something goes awry and they learn their lesson forever and become a good and worthy woman who knows her place in society! I can see how many parts would've been more relevant and progressive at the time but some parts like Jo giving up writing because it's too scandalous and (apart from Jo) the ending point for all the sisters to be happy and dutiful wives was quite disappointing and it is a relief to think that society has progressed since.
