Of Shadows and Obsession
by Sarah Fine
Well this was a disappointment. I enjoyed Of Metal and Wishes but this prequel did nothing for me. Having the story told from Bo's point of view was definitely a hindrance to me since I am not keen on his character to begin with. I really did not enjoy reading about Bo's obsession with a 13 year old Wen, the main character in the first book. Bo is 17 at this point and is creepily obsessed and stalking Wen. The age difference between 17 and 13 makes this disturbing. Were we supposed to overlook this because of Bo's tragic past etc? Because you don't get a creepy stalker "free card" for a tragedy. In addition to Bo, the writing itself did not seem as good as in Of Metal and Wishes. It was repetitive, using the same descriptions for things over and over again. You would think this unlikely given a short story but somehow Fine managed it repeatedly. She clearly enjoyed describing Wen as a treasure box (or some form thereof) and detailing Bo's metal parts knocking people out of the way in the crowd...repeatedly.
Overall Of Shadows and Obsession was disappointing and I hope it is not an indicator for book two.
