Connelly’s prose and dialogue are tight as ever. The problem was the characters. There was almost no insight about who Detective Stilwell is as a person; by the end, you don’t even know his first name. Deputy Lampley, exiled to Catalina Island for being trigger-happy, would have been a more interesting protagonist.
This is by far the weakest entry in Connelly’s canon since the Jack McEvoy trilogy.
