Paid in Blood: A DI Matt Fisher Crime Thriller by Susan Handley

4.0

Paid In Blood - Susan Handley

Lucy Stirling, billionaire celebrity, is murdered at a charity gallery event and DI Matt Fisher is tasked with finding her killer. His first case after being blinded in an acid attack, he feels under pressure to prove to himself and to his DCI that he can still do the job.
He has the help of his guide dog Luna and DC Beth Nightingale and they find themselves having to unravel a web of lies and deceit to unmask the killer.

I have to admit this one totally hooked me in, I found it really gripping and was racing to finish. Mainly because I had no clue who had done it, I can usually have a stab and I had a few thoughts but was totally wrong!
I really liked Matt Fisher, he’s quite gritty and no nonsense. I found it an interesting concept to have a blind DI. It is really made clear the difficulties to someone who is sighted, such as myself, and really made me think about the issues it causes.

I liked his relationship with Nightingale, they make a great team, it was good to see their trust developing through the book.
Falcon the DCI seems determined to try to get him off the case because of his disability but without it looking like discrimination, she is definitely one to watch in future!
He has his work cut out to silence his critics and solve the murder, there are plenty of suspects and soon a second body is found. Fisher is struggles to find connections but rather than your bog standard police procedurals, he engages his brain and finds the solution and the killer, which I loved - being a Poirot ‘leetle grey cells’ fan!

This was a really gripping start to a new series and I’m looking forward to more!
