The book started out kind of promising. Not the most fast-paced plot, but it was entertaining enough at first. The farther I got, though, the more boring and scattered everything became. A lot of the worldbuilding didn’t make much sense, the plot moved at a snail’s pace and felt all over the place, and the characters seemed to lose their original traits and started behaving inconsistently.

A lot of the girl’s family kind of toxic – both in the way they treated her (the father) and in how the magical learning process were portrayed. But none of it ever really gets addressed. So why is it there? Just so she fits better with the tragic backstory of her love interest? I tell you, it doesn’t work that way. Their conversations felt stilted, and the intimate scene near the end was completely out of place – it didn’t fit their dynamic at all and was honestly just cringe.

I thought about DNFing the book several times, but I’d already made it to 70% and wanted to see it through. The ending turned out to be anticlimactic, so… the joke’s on me, I guess.
