this book was an extremely insightful and interesting insight into race and class relations in the UK. i really enjoyed the blend of auto-biography and facts in the form of sociological, political, and historical commentary. these two dimensions provide a very grounded overview of the topic, as akala's own experiences create a narrative in an almost auto-ethnographic way, while still explaining the underlying causes and providing justifications backed by research.
akala is also a very good writer, and his prose is fairly easy to follow yet still engaging and enjoyable to read, making the topics broached more accessible than many more academic books on the topic. i felt like i learned a lot and will actually remember much of what was written.
overall, i would really recommend this book to everyone, whether already familiar with the topics or completely new to it, as it provides unique insights and covers many perspectives and issues.
