The White Album: Essays
by Joan Didion
informative
reflective
slow-paced
Wow this was a tough read for me to get through. I’ve been trying to read Didion’s works and her essays are so hit and miss for me. I think some of her takes that were more groundbreaking when these were published are not holding up to the test of time and I feel that her perspective represents a very privileged white feminist view.
The White Album did have a few essays I really enjoyed hence the 3 rating, but there were sections that were so slow and boring. In particular, I could have skipped the whole section II California Republic. These essays just did not appeal to me and I found them incredibly boring.
I did enjoy the titular essay, The White Album, and a few of the essays from the sections Women and Sojourns, but I didn’t find this a standout collection of Didion’s work.
