Norwegian Wood
by Haruki Murakami
Toru and Naoko find themselves pushed together after the loss of their friend. But Naoko's mental health starts to deteriorate, and she goes to live in a sanatorium. While at college, Toru befriends Midori. As their relationship grows, Toru still finds himself drawn back to Naoko.
"Norwegian Wood" feels like an expose' on growing up. Often times, we're told our college years are the best years of our lives. But being a young adult can feel disorienting. We experience major losses. We have messy relationships. We feel alone and without direction. Murakami depicts these struggles perfectly through Toru. Growing up can really be heartbreaking, and Murakami writes it beautifully.
