If at 16 you would have told me one day John Green, author of Looking for Alaska, would one day write a book about Tuberculosis and the various ways our society has decided to let this very treatable still exist I would have laughed at you? Tuberculosis is obviously a disease of the past. Wrong. In this short book Green spells out how tuberculosis continues to exist after major advancements in our world. This was a fascinating read. I appreciated how we got to meet Henry, a young tuberculosis patient, and get to know his story and the ways that many factors including poverty almost lead to his death. Through Henry we are able to build a real connection to individuals who have tuberculosis and empathize with their fight. It’s easy to feel discouraged with everything that is happening in the world but this book encourages us to remember that there is hope. We just need to reach and fight for it.
“We can do and be so much for each other-but only when we see one another in our full humanity, not as statistics or problems but as people who deserve to be alive in the world.”
