Captain Marvel, Vol. 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More by Kelly Sue DeConnick

4.0

The story is great - surprising in the fact that it seems life a self-contained collection even though it's only the first part of an ongoing series. This collection could very easily become the basis for the planned Captain Marvel movie that is slated for release in a few years without having to sacrifice any beats or scenes from this trade. The comic is fun and action packed, Carol Danvers is a dynamic lead, and it examines some hearty issues without feeling to preachy or weighed down. The only downside is that the characters (Carol included) all feel flat in this first part. More time is given to crafting the mystery (which I enjoyed), but it was hard to be too invested in the plight of the story without being too attached to any of the characters.
