etoiline 's review for:
The Last Dragon
by Jane Yolen, Rebecca Guay
First off, the art in this graphic novel is amazing. It reminds me of Mucha paintings. I read an advanced copy, so some of the art and lettering might not have been in the final stage, but it looked great anyway. I sometimes have trouble with graphic novels, because I'm used to reading without pictures, and sometimes they seem intrusive. But with this book, which is geared towards a YA audience, the text was pretty sparse and that meant that the artwork stood out more and made it easier for words and pictures to meld as I read. The story is simple, with a happy ending and a nice twist on the hero's role. The plot is familiar (a dragon terrorizes a medieval village in an alternate world) and stresses teamwork to overcome obstacles. This would be a great book to read with your kids.
