my girl january really is stronger than the marines 😭

when this book hit, it REALLY hit. and those moments weren't rare but it wasn't a constant thread. the rest, however, was just okay. enjoyed well enough, but nothing outsounding. i went through a bit of a slog in the middle, which def impacted my enjoyment, but that's not the book's fault, i just had other external stuff going on.

i will say this book was so so so romantic. for being so grumpy, gus might be one of theee most romantic male leads i've read. it seems silly to highlight a romance novel for being very romantic, but i find that a lot of romance books lack that sense of true romance for me. i really appreciated that.

i also love that this is single pov - may be an unpopular opinion idk but i really don't like multiple pov books written in the first person. i find that (in het romances especially), the author's never really get the tone of one of the characters right - typically the male lead tbh - and it just brings me out of the story entirely. i liked that we stayed in january's head and got to witness her inner world. despite not ever being in gus' pov, i still feel like he was super fleshed out, and i really believed in him, as a character.

i feel like the last person on this planet to pick up an emily henry book but i'm glad i finally made it here and i will definitely be picking up more of her novels!
