Crier's War
by Nina Varela
I wanted to like this so badly. The idea and the premise sounded right up my alley and I was sure I would love it.
The idea was great but the execution felt so clunky. The dialogue felt unnatural, the motives and actions of most of the characters felt... weird and forced? Crier and Ayla's thoughts would be explored for pages and pages at a time, to the point that it got boring, and even having absorbed all their thoughts, I still didn't feel sympathy or understanding for most of their actions. The pacing felt off everywhere, the actions leading in to the drama made no sense to me. I constantly felt "but why??" or "huh??" going through my brain.
Maybe it was just me and I had a problem immersing in to the text for some reason. Hoping this was just a badly placed foothold for a fantastic 2nd book.
