If you’re reading these books for the first time, please ignore the publisher’s order and read this book as originally published, #6. If read first, it spoils many surprises in the other books. If read sixth, it reveals background and lays the foundation for The Last Battle. If you’re reading this book to children, it’s themes and characters are more mature than those in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which is the best introduction to the series.
ETA: the audiobook narration by Kenneth Branagh is excellent. These books were written to be read aloud.
