Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping
by Judith Levine
This is an interesting book. I applaud her idea, even while I question some of her decisions as to what is "necessary" (driving an hour round-trip every day to ski = necessary, but business dinners out = not necessary?). I suppose that is the point: we all would make different choices.
I am totally fascinated by the idea of VS, or its less-structured equivalents, as being just another part of the consumer culture (if a part defined by being in opposition to it). I hadn't thought of it that way, but totally agree! Perhaps for some people the rush of NOT spending is the rush that others get from shopping?
UPDATE: Well, in the end: I applaud the idea. Much like "Julie and Julia", a great idea written by an author who finds herself waaaaaayyyyyy more interesting than I do. The discussions on spending: interesting. The endless political discussion with a token stab at making it relevant to the topic at hand: I could have done without.
The first 25% was 4 stars. The rest, maybe 1 star.
