Song of the Six Realms by Judy I. Lin
4.0

Is it a little on the nose to describe a book that is built upon the ideas of threads and poetry and stories and music as lyrical? Because this book is exactly that.

We are drawn into a world of myth and celestial beings at the creation of the realms of mortal, spirit, demon, and god. And at the center is Xue, a mortal girl destined to lead a life that is not entirely her own, molded by the choices of those before her. Legacy comes up a lot in this book, but also the idea of remaking a legacy to build something new. Or to rebuild what has been broken.

There is intrigue and power games and possibly an unrealized love that is bittersweet and lingering. The pace is measured, but that allows for time to let the world build. To get lost in the words and the images they create. There is simplicity in the story, but also layers of great ache for what some have sacrificed to remake the wrongs of the past.
