A Family Is a Family Is a Family by Sara O'Leary

5.0

A Family is a Family is a Family is a picture book about different types of families. In a classroom, children are asked what makes their families special. Each is dedicated to each child’s family, for example, one child says “ My moms are terrible singers” and there is full color illustration of the a kid and his two moms sitting atop an apartment building, singing joyously. The illustrations really bring this book to life, as they are all drawn in vivid color, with many details that show these children’s individual lives. Through the illustrations, we can see the diverse representation of people of different races, body types, ability types, and ages (for the parents). Through the story, there a multiple family types represented, such as families with two moms/dads, foster and adopted families, and many more. This provides mirrors for children to find their own families, as well as windows as it can show other children how other people live. I was very happy to find my family represented as we aren’t usually in many books (my sister is adopted). The illustrations are very cute, and I would definitely recommend this book.
