The Road by Cormac McCarthy
4.0

nothing makes me happier than seeing people seethe over this book. i think its swell. it’s simple, but beautifully harrowing. there’s something captivating about the “road” itself. it’s this enigmatic entity that everyone seems drawn to. the doom and gloom painted on the road are somehow less grim than whats beyond its boundaries. i hate the magnetic pull it has for the characters because it feels like this endless Sisyphus-esque journey that never has a conclusion. it’s draining, but it also feels like stopping would be the death of these characters. to carry on the “fire” is the only true way to stay alive. to find peace or comfort is to indulge in the cruel realities we create, which is just submitting to death. the fight isnt futile, it’s the only thing that matters. the fire that is kindled and rekindled and rekindled is hope itself.

it’s a novel that feels amorphous and thats okay. if you think this is fart-sniffy and a waste of time, that’s ok too.
i think that mccarthys writing style lends itself incredibly well to this style of story. it’s incredibly easy to pick up and put down because it doesn’t matter where they are, or what they are doing. its vivid, haunting, and powerful. i am really happy to finish it though because i’ve been having nightmares and i think this might be related in some capacity. regardless, this gets 2 big green thumbs up from me. definitely not my favorite mccarthy novel, but one i enjoyed thoroughly.
