This was a twisty, mysterious, and compelling novel. I found myself having to review and re-read, looking for clues I missed the first time around. The mood is heavy and serious, with very little in the way to lighten it.
I found it difficult for the first half of the book to keep track of the various sets of characters (the occupants of Orchard House, the various powerful men in the assembly and the scions of the Royal family) and I said, “I did NOT see that coming!” aloud about 20 times.
I will admit I was occasionally wistful for an alt version of this book, in which women could openly be more than possessions, wives, mothers, or whores.
