So many things were unexpected about this book.  The dialogue. The social commentary.  The beautiful and poetic writing. The intensely thought-provoking quotes. And woven all throughout, beautiful illustration of who God is, and how he can work through and in His people in the darkest of places.

“I have never thought that a Christian would be free of suffering, umfundisi. For our Lord suffered. And I come to believe that he suffered, not to save us from our suffering, but to teach us how to bear suffering. For he knew that there is no life without suffering.”
