The Mothers by Brit Bennett

Why does this feel like anti-choice propaganda the whole way through? I am trying to let this be an individual’s story and respect the main characters, but I can’t help feeling disappointed by the author’s decision to shame abortion every chance she gets. I recognize these decisions are complicated for many people (though not all!), and also do we need another novel with this narrative? The author complicated many other narratives throughout (mothering, loss, suicide, being a first generation student, religion, etc), but this one felt tough to sit with the entire way. Major content warning for suicide by the way. (Happens right at beginning but referred to a lot throughout with some detail and quite a bit of shame attached). I wasn’t blown away by this novel. I gave this book tons of chances to change my mind, but it didn’t get there.
