The Last by Hanna Jameson

3.5 ⭐️

The Last is a story told by Jon Keller,an academic, in a Swiss-hotel with 20 other occupants; all having survived the end of the world. There is no news, no internet and resources are scarce. Then there’s a dead body.

Jon decides to keep a journal of his life in a post-apocalyptic world, just in case someone finds it. He writes about his worries for his family in Washington, new friendships he’s made, some enemies (?) and of course his quest to find the murderer of a young girl.

Much of the book was an enjoyable read. It’s not the most captivating thriller I have come across; I feel like it actually barely focused on the murder. But I did enjoy reading about Jon’s new everyday life at the hotel.

The end itself was also quite underwhelming for my liking. However I’m still glad I read The Last. I also see Goodreads has classified it as a ‘techno-thriller’ which I think is perfect. I’ve never heard of it but can already tell it’s the perfect category for it.
