Fierce Fairytales: Poems and Stories to Stir Your Soul by Nikita Gill

4.0

"But you, my darling, have an army of all the stars, to fill your grief-filled days with the comfort you can hold onto.

You are not alone. With this endless universe above you that has given you the gift of existence. You are not alone."

What a stunning collection of poems and short stories!

Nikita Gill shows much talent, grace, and power in her pieces, especially those with illustrations. Her writing technique is unique, one I haven't seen in a while. The rhyming scheme varies across the writings, and she establishes the tone early on, giving each text a narrator with the right softness or aggression. I almost hear someone else reading to me as if it were a bedtime story on all the classic fairytales (though with Gill's twists).

I annotated many lines and dog-eared (yes, I'm one of those people) the corners of complete poems and short stories I want to refer back to someday. Part of me wishes I had read these poems early on in life. Instead of collecting dust for some time, I could've reached for Gill's book and developed a healthier, stronger, and more magical mindset in my teen years. Much of what she writes is empowering, especially for women and girls. You feel heard, seen, respected, and valued. Though I enjoyed her re-tellings of some classic fairytales, her more conceptual pieces pulled me in. There truly is a fierceness in her work. A balance across feminine rage, a calm sense of power and control, and the softness of a woman's touch and vision of the world. What resonated with me most were the few pieces on motherhood, colonization, and grief. How beautiful and heartbreaking.

And, this has to be said, what a captivating book cover! The more you look at it, the more details reveal themselves before you.

I hope to read more of her work soon!
