I don't think I've ever read anything like quite like this.It was very refreshing, but beware. Though I did enjoy this book, I did have a few problems with it.
So quick recap: Em and Finn are living in a pretty bleak world, and they're lives aren't doing so hot either. They're being held prisoner in a secret government facility, being tortured by a man called the doctor (whovian shout out!). They escape in a time machine and go back four years into the past in an attempt to kill the doctor before he invents Cassandra and sends the world to hell. Sounds intriguing, doesn't it?
Is it filled with action and adventure? Most of the time, no. That's what I was most disappointed about in this book. Once the story is rolling, nothing really happens! Em and Finn stalk Marina, James, and Finn for about two hundred pages, with nothing but a single, unimpressive, unrealistic attempt to show for it (if National Security is guarding the hospital, you can't just attempt murder and steal a car undetected!) There's filler left and right that ultimately leads nowhere. The characters go around in emotional circles. It's a standstill for the majority of the book.
But will the concept itself blow your mind? Absolutely! This one's a mind bender. It's actually pretty hard to grasp sometimes.
What I would have really liked to see was how the doctor turns into the doctor, not just the tell-tale signs that he will ultimately lead to that character metamorphosis over the course of several years. I would have liked to see more detailed flashbacks of how time travel causes the world to go so astray, how Em and Finn escape and how they survive on the run, and even how they fall in love. That, to me, sounds like a much more action-filled, interesting plot-line then going on a goose chase after some almost ordinary kids. The end was good though. I'll give it that.
Regarding the shipping, that was a very unique way of demonstrating a love triangle. I was very intrigued by it, and Finn! Oh, Finn! He made this book for me!!! Him and Em were funny and passionate and everything I wanted. The James X Marina scenes were sweet too, but FINN!
So I loved the characters, I loved the time-travel concept, and I loved the beginning and the end, despite the uneventful middle. Would I recommend it? Sure, especially if you want something different, but you'll need some patience.
By the way, your book is about time travel and you have a character you mysteriously call "the doctor." You thought us Whovians wouldn't notice by we did.
