Tyll by Daniel Kehlmann
5.0

now this is the kind of historical fiction i can get behind ! TYLL is a blend of historical fiction, folklore, and fantasy, and daniel kehlmann tells our titular character’s story in a graceful non-linear structure—tyll is a chaotic but clever and weirdly stable jester, and we follow him throughout the mess of europe’s thirty year’s war. the premise of a jester is what drew me, but TYLL truly stands apart and is incredible in all of its other aspects as well—tyll is the perfect character for daniel kehlmann to use as a vessel to point out moral and philosophical contradictions, critiques of human character, and the general absurdity of the times. and there’s a lot of absurdity!

also shoutout to ross benjamin; this book didn’t feel translated at all in the best way.
