The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson
3.0

Even in his earlier novels, as evident in this, Hunter S. Thompson's prose had that characteristic wit and snappiness but here it reads as sweltering as San Juan's weather and (apparent) socio-political climate in the '50s. But my favorite moments in his prose are when he slows it down and goes into a short, economical, yet introspective and sincere monologue. There's plenty in this novel, especially towards the beginning and end. He transitions between these two modes pretty smoothly.

Even with Kemp being drenched in sweat and drowned in rum, his character trajectory is perhaps the least eventful out of the main cast. It was an entertaining read but there's something about the novel that felt incomplete, not narrative-wise but something thematic that needed a resolution… maybe something about the suckfish analogy near the end made me start realizing that. Anyway, I would recommend this for a summer read.
