Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson
4.0

I enjoyed this more than I'd expected.

It's a YA dual-timeline murder mystery with several of the standard tropes (quirky students in rich-people boarding school where not everyone is rich, sullen character with bouncy bestie, instalove) but missing many others (teenagers are idiots, intense focus on love interest(s), namedropping popular culture)

It has some pretty big drawbacks (repetition, more repetition, bad poetry, worse riddles, repetition of all those things) but for the most part, I enjoyed listening to this up until the end when I realized how unnecessarily drawn out this story is going to be.

I appreciated the nods to Dorothy Parker's "Resume" and William Hughes Mearns' "Antigonish" but, again, they were ridiculously overused.
