The Midnight Palace by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
2.0

Considering how much I loved The Prince of Mist, I had super high expectations for this book and they were not met by far.

While the writing is still pure Ruiz Zafón - amazing most of the time - the story was just so scattered and unbelievable, even if it was supposed to be fantasy. Besides other problems, the narration absolutely randomly switches from 3rd person to Ian and then back to 3rd person for a couple of sentences in the middle! I fully understand why the first and last parts were from Ian's POV but why the switch in the middle (or did I just imagine it to stop thinking about other unbelievable things happening?)

Among many other issues I had with the story - how can Peake run with two babies for so long at the start of the book without dropping them? Also the incestuous vibes were rather off-putting when the two twins meet again...
