Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? by Neil Gaiman
2.0
Two stars is probably a bit harsh and I'm a Neil Gaiman fan but as I've mentioned I'm only a casual Batman reader. I appreciate what Neil was going for, highlighting the different era's of Batman, paying homage to a wealth of writers and artists over the years while also tipping a nod to Alan Moore's seminal Superman story.
Where Moore's tale was accessible and appreciated without having a detailed knowledge of Superman I found this harder to get the references and call backs. It's an interesting metaphysical tale cementing Batman as myth more than man but I found it didn't do that much for me. The artwork though is fantastic.
I did quite like some of the backup stories also by Gaiman, especially the Riddler tale and it's a nice hardcover. Good for fans and ok for the casual reader.
