Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernières

4.0

A tragic love story (or two, or three) set against the backdrop of a doomed war of conquest (or two, or three). The most brutal parts are inspired by the true history of the Italian and German occupation of the Greek island of Kefalonia during World War II. The lengthy and more philosophical epilogue turns the novel into a multigenerational story of loss and regret. An arguably high sugar content is offset by the author's irreverent and often ironic style. The prose is beautiful, but long-winded descriptions sometimes drag on and on.
