It took me 2 tries to get into the book. It felt like the first half of the book was so slow and a lot of it felt kind of like a “so what” sort of set up. The main character feels relatable in how she just doesn’t seem to gaf about what is going on in the house. I think the second half of the book really picks up and actually pulled me in. I was a bit convinced there for a bit that this was somehow all something she had imagined but wasn’t too upset with Hal’s death given how he had treated her. Even if she claimed things were getting better I thought the ending was a bit cliche but finished up the book fairly well. I will note that the writing about the domestic violence was a bit of a shock and should have been flagged as a note somewhere as a warning. Those parts were very hard to get through.
Graphic: Domestic abuse, Emotional abuse, Gore, Physical abuse, Violence, Blood, Murder, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Alcoholism and Schizophrenia/Psychosis
Minor: Self harm
