Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza
by Gloria E. AnzaldĂșa
The issues surrounding the American-Mexican border are hardly a huge headline in the New York Times, but once you read this book, you will never forget the powerful and painful tri-lingual (including an ancient tongue) stories contained in this work. Even if you don't speak Spanish I would recommend you trying to read it aloud, sometimes poetry is surprisingly universal. Its also a history lesson, for those non-fiction readers. It also deals with sexuality, cultural norms and power relationships in the context of the borders that surrounded the author.
