lyderature 's review for:
Hallowed
by Cynthia Hand
If you thought Unearthly was good, Hallowed is a thousand times better.
And if you didn't....well, refrain from anymore reading of this humble review and go to B&N, and give it another try!
Back to the book.
Clara Gardner's faced the fire. She's completed her purpose. Heaven has brought it's wrath upon her no-longer-carrot-colored-rather-strawberry-blonder head, and she can just get on with her life....right?
Nope, of course not! As fate would have it (or perhaps the big guy up there), apparently purposes can be for life . Clara the Angel-blood is not done being the Angel-blood!
And us readers go yay, because that means we get more Unearthly books ^_^
Now, call me unobservant, call me unattentive, call me totally oblivious, or call me stupid (no, actually, please don't do the last one)...but I did not see the major plot twist before it came and hit me smackdab on the head? And then I was blearily like..."Wait....did that actually happen?"
Spoiler CLARA'S MOM IS GOING TO DIE? YOU MEAN TO SAY, Tucker, the guy that EVERYONE thinks'll die, actually isn't? So, instead of having to deal with a little fangirl heartache, us readers have to feel the same shock and sorrow and despair that Clara goes through as she loses her MOM?
Oh, Cynthia Hand did not just go there.
But SHE DID! It happens!
An incredibly frustrating and maybe even agonizing part that all Angel-bloods have in their lives is their power to see the future. And often times, it's a painful, maybe even shocking future, that they have to involve themselves in, but not necessarily prevent .
Or else, you know, heaven's fury and fire and stuff like that. Bad.
So Clara spends the entire novel knowing, and dreading the fact that someone she loves is going to die.
And then Hand drops the bomb on us.
Oh, haha, that was punny, Hand...a hand...dropping bomb...I'll stop now.
But the other plot twist was entirely too predictable. Or maybe it was just because Hand had just crushed our and Clara's souls, and then she tries to spring one on us a second time and we're like, "Oh no, girl, just no."
Spoiler Clara's dad is an angel. A full fledged, Heaven's messenger, kind of angel. Which makes her and her brother super duper powerful.
Well, good for her.
And then Hand desperately attempts another surprise attack, and it fails even more.
Spoiler Christian is also this super powerful 3/4 angel so him and Clara are MEANT to be together
There! Cynthia Hand has jammed in the final puzzle piece! It fits!
It fits a little too perfectly, if you get what I'm saying.
But despite that, this novel is just so addicting. You think you've read it before, angel and human love each other, but angel and human really can't be together, so angel and angel should end up together blah blah blah. But then Hand throws in a curveball, that leaves readers dumbfoundedly stunned and blinking.
And I absolutely adore how Hand always hints at those tried-and-true typical PNRs, and how they fail where she doesn't. Clara is the kind of girl who knows those Bellas, and never understood them. She never wanted this love-triangle, and thinks it's kind of stupid.
Aha! Now ain't that a slap in the face for those Team So-and-So Books!
There are other great things about Hallowed, but I just felt it was necessary to point out a few of them. The characters are still as loveable as ever, and the action is still as action-y.
I know that's not a word.
Just read the books, you won't be disappointed.
Boundless, I'm coming for you!
