This is my third (fourth? Fifth? Nineteenth?) read of this book. It influenced mento reexamine my views on the death penalty, ultimately changing from "pro" to "anti."

One of the main characters, Sam, is on death row for committing a heinous crime. He's a racist bigot and seemingly irredeemable. The story helps you realize, though, that every person on death row has a family and a history and an impact, good or bad.

Grisham does an excellent job describing the emotions and mechanics of the appeals process and the process of utilizing the death penalty. It's heart-rending and anxiety inducing to go through it with Adam, the other main character.

This is a great book that will make you think, hopefully, about the issues with our justice system.
