Shrines of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson

3.0

What worked for me: The vivid depiction of the 1920s, and snappy dialogue from a wide variety of characters.

What didn't work for me: I found the first half much more engaging than the second, which dragged. There was also a lack of cohesion; it felt like 2-3 books that didn't belong jumbled together. Sacrificing at least one storyline might have helped. I really disliked the "mystery", which involved the murder and attempted murder of girls and women. It seemed unnecessary and it didn't work as a mystery or thriller.
