Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong

4.0

Thank you so much Simon and Schuster for sending me an advanced reader copy for me to read and review.

4.5 stars

An incredible book, and I am so looking forward to the second. Foul Lady Fortune is set after the events of These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends. Rosalind is such a great character, and after reading OVE I hadn't focused on her. But this book did a fantastic job of diving deep into her character. The plot was captivating and fast paced, and each plot twist had me reeling. On the edge of my seat (literally) gasping. I desperately need book two because of that ending.

Chloe’s ability to have a whole cast of characters and make each one interesting in their own way, or have their own whole stories, is amazing. I truly felt like I was watching a movie at some parts.
When I first started reading I was worried I would not be interested in Orion's character, purely because I was so used to reading about Roma (from These Violent Delights), but was I wrong. I loved Orion dearly and he is definitely one of my favourite characters. He goes through so much and it his whole story is so enticing and thorough.

I have always loved how Chloe Gong writes politics in fantasy. She did not disappoint with this book. This book is set in 1930s China, where imperialism and colonialism is at its peak. Chloe takes on an amazing perspective and writes it perfectly.

The reason for this not being a full 5 stars is because I had wished for more of Rosalind as Lady Fortune. We see her take on the role in the beginning, but the plot drifts away from it. Fortune is her other identity, but we don’t see it much. What I did enjoy though, was seeing Rosalind using her assassin capabilities.

I am thrilled for book two and cannot wait for everyone to read this now that it is out into the world!
