All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

5.0

One of the best books I have read in a long time. The story of Werner and Marie is beautifully crafted and compelling. Although the book is long, the chapters are tantalizing short, which meant I spent quite a few nights reading "just one more" for hours.

The story of two young people caught in the violence of World War 2, All The Light We Cannot See highlights the helplessness and confusion of people trying to survive in a world of senseless brutality and cruelty. Werner, a young German orphan who has a gift for creating and fixing radio transmitters, gets caught up in the German war machine, and Marie, a blind French girl, escapes Paris with her father and struggles to survive as her world begins to narrow, and she becomes more and more alone.

Both of these characters struggle to reconcile the beauty and mystery of the world with the increasing brutality and horror they are forced to experience.

An amazing and memorable book, and one I can't wait to reread.
