The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain

2.0

“We had more than any two people in the world. And then we fell down. First you, and then me. Yes, it makes it even. We’re down here together. But we’re not up high any more. Our beautiful mountain is gone.”

2.5 stars. I really don’t have much to say about this, and it might be just a genre thing, as this is my first “hard-boiled noir” I’ve read. The Postman Always Rings Twice did feel dated to me, and I personally didn’t care much for the characters or dialogue. What this little novel does capture is the gritty elements of noir that have you rooting for the characters to get away with the crime. When this aspect is viewed in isolation, it hits the mark. As a whole package, however, it doesn’t work quite as well for me.
