City of the Plague God

I really wanted to like this. I enjoyed the undertones, the vibe that the plot was angling for, I just think it was not executed to the best effect. it was way too fast-paced, and nothing seemed to matter because of it. We are thrust from one danger to the next, with little thinking or acting actually getting our heroes out of trouble/harm's way. They are in danger, then they are not. Then they are again. There is no breathing room, no processing space, no real stakes or tension because within a page of the danger happening, we are already past it and moving on to the next one. The plot itself carries this to a 3, but it's a hard fought 3. I finished it, but I came close to not (which is saying something, I've only ever DNF'd a single other book, and it had nothing to do with the book itself and everything to do with my own mood).
so it's gets a 3 - wanted to like it, but really I'm just glad it's done and I can move on to something new.
