The common canard that gods are invented to explain something has always bothered me. People don't need gods because they need an explanation, but because they need a relationship. In order to have a relationship with the forest, with the river, with the fire, then those things have to also be people, and that's why they need to be gods.
This is a story about those relationships, and what kind of people those gods would turn out to be, when the forest, or the river, or the fire were gods.
